On Sunday, May 31st, hike with us in person or remotely...

Moving For Life cordially invites you to join  Hiking-For-Life NYC 2015, a hike-a-thon on May 31st to support free Moving For Life classes in NYC hospitals.  This year, Hiking-For-Life-ers will once again join Green Gym Day's* magical journey through New York City's finest green spaces. Come explore the cliffside parks of northern Manhattan, traversing a total of 6 parks over 6 miles of breathtaking views of both the East and Hudson Rivers. You may choose to hike a portion or all of the inspiring trek.

Along the way, Moving For Life will lead health-giving stretches and Green Gym Day will teach you how to turn any park into a green gym. All hikers will receive a Green Gym Morningside Fitness Map & Moving For Life Button. Hiking-For-Life-ers reaching sponsorship minimums recieve fun, limited-edition MFL goodies (see below for details.) Top off the day with a visit to the Cloisters or have brunch in Fort Tryon Park. To join as a fundraising hiker, you may register online  or register by mail. If you'd just like to hike for fun, please RSVP online or RSVP by email by May 23rd. Everyone is welcome to hike with us; so tell all your friends and family!

Moving For Life Dance To Recovery DVD (English or Spanish)

What's  Class Like?

Through accessible instruction class members can learn the anatomical and exercise knowledge to take control of their post-treatment healing and become as active as possible:
  • Class begins with an easy breath-based warm-up and stretching—safely increasing the range of movement in the arms and legs. Next, explore breathing and movement exercises that are specially designed to reduce swelling (lymphedema).
  • Then, reduce fatigue by dancing actively to upbeat music. Work up a sweat and awaken and enliven bodies and spirits instilled with whimsy. Build strength using weights and therabands or one's own body weight.
  • Some sequences challenge the brain - helping to fight the effects of mental fog and confusion.
  • Each session comes to a close with a relaxing stretching sequence and an community dialogue about new feelings and resources.
  • Every class member receives personalized instruction and is guided to build greater awareness of, respect for, and control of all part of the body (helping body image and self-respect).
  • Upbeat music and free movement serves as an antidote to depression, doing so with others counteracts isolation.
